Alice in Wonderland… of things

Artistic direction: Mikri Arktos

Curator: Iris Kritikou

Opening: Tuesday 20 December, 20:00

in a society of goods and accumulated things, what is worth saving?

Inspired by Lewis Carroll’s daring heroine, we go in search of Alice today, in an age defined by globalisation and technology, by the speed of communication and travel, by the dominance of market rules and mass culture. In a fluid, ever-changing world, where both the notion of what is precious and that of the bare minimum a person needs for physical and mental survival are turning into relentless question marks in more and more places on the planet, what is ultimately worth keeping, what is ultimately worth saving, may be different from what we once imagined.

Continuing a tradition that began with the exhibition “The Secrets of the Garden” and continued with “The Fairy-Tale World of Hans Christian Andersen”, December at IANOS Art Gallery is once again devoted to a fairy tale: the iconic “Alice in Wonderland”.

“Alice in the Land of Things” faces different challenges from Carroll’s heroine and has to devise new ways of surviving on her journey. So let us look at ourselves in the looking-glass and think like Alice.

The exhibition opens on 20 December 2016.

The revamped IANOS Art Gallery is in its fourth year, under the artistic direction of Mikri Arktos and curated by Iris Kritikou. It focuses on themed showcases and solo exhibitions whose main starting point is a direct or indirect reference to the many-sided, fascinating universe of literature and poetry, as well as to the relationship between a space devoted to the world of books and the city that surrounds it.
